Zalando's Inner Voices: Getting dressed gets a control room

By Shweta Sonali — 2026-09-03

You know that moment when you're standing in front of your wardrobe and there's this argument happening inside your head? One voice says confidence. Another says safe. A third says absolutely not.

Zalando just made a film about it.

The AW26 "Inner Voices" campaign dropped last week and it's doing something different. Not the usual celebrity-in-nice-clothes thing. Instead, they've literally put Lily Collins' inner debate on screen—there's a control room inside her head, and it's got company. Bella Freud, the London designer, acts as the voice of calm and poise. Nicky Campbell, the broadcaster, delivers the sharp, withering commentary. Both of them are monitoring Collins from this visual "control room" while she figures out what to actually wear in the real world.

The premise is so obvious it's almost missed. We all do this. We get dressed, we change our minds, we ask ourselves if this reads as the person we actually are or just the person we're pretending to be. The campaign takes that exhausting internal parliament and gives it faces, timing, editing. Film language.

Directed by Melina Matsoukas—who's won Grammy awards for music videos and actually knows how to make you watch something—it's their first long-form campaign. Not a spot. An actual film that explores the chaos of getting ready without being clever about it. The joke isn't trying to land; it just happens because the situation is already funny. Anyone who dresses themselves knows this.

What caught me was how specific it gets about what that internal council sounds like. Freud's reassurance, Campbell's deadpan. They're not generalized voices—they have personalities, rhythm, contradictions. It means the film doesn't resolve into a punchline about buying things on Zalando. It just ends with Collins stepping out, confident, because she's actually made a choice that matches who she is. That's the sell. Not the clothes. The feeling.

Zalando operates across 29 European markets and this is their push toward entertainment-driven e-commerce. They've already cycled Lily Collins through a spring campaign about European summer. Now they're giving her autumn, and this control-room concept, and treating the getting-ready moment like it deserves cinematic treatment. Which it does.

The campaign runs across all their channels from August 31. There's a Levi's co-branded version floating around too, which makes sense—jeans are where the fit-and-confidence question actually matters most.

It won't change the way you shop. But it might make you laugh the next time you're standing in front of your wardrobe arguing with yourself.
